Our Mission

The Department of Economics supports the teaching, research, and service missions of the UNCG and the Bryan School of Business and Economics. The department’s undergraduate courses and programs prepare students for the competitive global marketplace, career and professional development, and graduate education. Its innovative graduate programs, the M.A. in Applied Economics and the Ph.D. in Economics focusing on applied microeconomics provide students with a mastery of advanced empirical and analytical methods so they can conduct high-quality research and contribute to the knowledge base in business, government, non-profit, and research settings. The department conducts high-quality nationally recognized research supporting its academic programs, promoting economic understanding, and fostering economic development in the Triad and throughout North Carolina.

About Our Department

research And the classroom

Our department conducts high-quality, nationally recognized research that supports its academic programs, promotes economic understanding, and fosters economic development in the community, the state, and the broader economy. As part of a Carnegie classified High-Research Activity University, economics faculty bridge research engagement with classroom instruction. The faculty is composed of both macro-focused and micro-focused economists with a strong research core in applied economics. Faculty research activities include publications in top-tier economics and field journals, sponsored research from private and public funding agencies, and professional service activities.

The department has been awarded more than $1.7 million in sponsored research funding over the last few years alone. This winning record includes grants from the National Institute for Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Economic Development Administration (EDA) which explore unique questions relevant to today’s society through innovative research methods. Faculty and students are encouraged to participate in conferences, professional development workshops, presentations, pursue grant opportunities, and serve in research assistantships. Advanced students may participate in co-authored papers with faculty mentors.

Exploring new ideas

Fostering a culture of collaboration and scholarship, the Economics Brown Bag Series invites faculty, students, and other researchers to present and discuss ongoing research or working papers. These projects are typically in a developmental stage, which allows for rich discussions and the exchange of new perspectives. Attendees are invited to bring their own ‘brown bag’ lunch and enjoy the fellowship of their peers, while experiencing new and influential research taking shape. Research topics span a vast array of subjects – from healthcare to environmental science, social safety nets, pay gaps, innovation, and many more.

The Economics Seminar Series is geared toward broadening professional networking opportunities and fostering collaboration among students, colleagues, and researchers in the field of economics and related areas of study. Attendees are presented with numerous research topics as guest speakers discuss published works from peer-reviewed economics or field journals.

These events provide attendees with an opportunity to hear about the outcomes and processes behind top research in a forum that welcomes an open discourse. Seminars are free and open to the public.
